The Jonathan Larson Grants were established in 1997. The grants have recognized and supported nearly one hundred composers, lyricists, bookwriters, and organizations to honor emerging talent and infuse the musical theatre community with new work.
2010 GRANT RECIPIENTS
Peter Lerman
"My passion is writing music and lyrics for theater. Many people find opportunities for fulfillment in jobs and education-I find opportunities in every word and each note I write in a song. These are chances to provide clarity, specificity, and drama for my work. I take them very seriously and cherish them."
|
Daniel Maté
"I didn't grow up on showtunes but have always loved well-crafted songs that tell stories and express character, no matter the genre. I think that there is so much that is inherently theatrical -- emotional, clever, fascinating, evocative, thrilling, surprising, immersive, immediate, human -- in all kinds of popular (and less popular) music and lyrics. I'm drawn to songs and stories that depict the human experience from the inside, with all its intensities, contradictions, strivings, and absurdities. If properly combined, I think music and theatre might just have a part to play in saving the world."

Michael Kooman and Christopher Dimond
"As musical story tellers, we aspire to expand the boundaries of a form limited only by imagination itself, to explore the depths of the human soul, particularly in its emotional extremes. It is therefore the goal of our work to explore hope in the face of despair, to find beauty and laughter in moments of supreme darkness."
