National Theatre Company Grant Guidelines
As part of its longstanding mission of celebrating and supporting the very best in theatre, the American Theatre Wing's National Theatre Company Grants recognize and support the most promising emerging theatre companies across the United States. We invite applications from companies or organizations that have been in continued existence for at least five years but not longer than fifteen years, during which time they have articulated a distinctive mission, cultivated an audience, and nurtured a community of artists in ways that strengthen the quality, diversity, and dynamism of American theatre.
ATW will distribute ten (10) grants for the 2010 cycle in the amount of $10,000 each for general operating support.
GENERAL CRITERIA
- ATW will seek to recognize companies that pursue a clearly defined mission, and whose work represents breadth, vitality, innovation, and a commitment to an artistic community, general audiences, or a specific demographic. ATW considers and values additional education, outreach work, and new play development on the part of the applicant company.
- Applicants must be a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, whose primary activities center on the production of dramatic and/or musical theater. Additional activities may include developmental and/or educational programming.
- Qualified companies will have produced at least five consecutive seasons, and have plans for an upcoming season.
For the purposes of this grant, ATW defines a "season" as producing at least two (2) plays or musicals in each year (defined by a 12 month period), each of which play a minimum of 16 public performances (including previews).
The productions in a season must be originated by the company or through a co-production agreement with another not-for-profit; productions presented, but not originated, by the company do not fulfill this criteria.
- Applicants must have incorporated between the years 1995 and 2005 (inclusive), and have an operating budget that does not exceed three million dollars.
-
Applicants must demonstrate that they pay their performers, and must legally acquire the rights to produce the pieces within their seasons.
