JANICE C. SIMPSON spent nearly three decades at Time magazine, serving in a variety of positions that included assistant managing editor, overseeing the magazine's coverage of arts, education, law, religion and lifestyle; and deputy chief of correspondents, supervising 11 news bureaus across the U.S. Before joining Time, she was a staff reporter for The Wall Street Journal. She has also worked at Essence, Ebony Jr!, and Woman's Day magazines and was a contributing editor to TheaterWeek magazine. She most recently served as contributing entertainment editor for W magazine. Jan currently teaches at the City University of New York's Graduate School of Journalism, where she is co-director of the Arts & Culture program. She also blogs twice a week about theater at the web site she created, Broadway & Me, and writes about theater for other news outlets. She serves on the Membership Committee for the Advisory Committee of the American Theatre Wing and is also a member of the Outer Critics Circle and the Independent Theater Bloggers Association. She holds a B.A. in Liberal Arts from Sarah Lawrence College and was a Knight-Bagehot Fellow at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, where she also served as a member of the editorial board of The Columbia Journalism Review. A native New Yorker, she lives on the Upper West Side with her husband Kamau Adilifu, a musician who has played in the orchestra for numerous Broadway shows.
