Alan Schuster
ALAN SCHUSTER has been working in the theatre industry for more than thirty-five years, performing functions including stage hand, stage manager, house manager, general manager, theatre manager, theatre owner/operator, producer, writer, and even actor. He has also owned and operated Off-Broadway theatres, including three prominent Off-Broadway houses in New York City, a four-theatre complex in Chicago, and a 600-seat theatre in San Francisco. In New York he was managing director of a Shakespeare touring company known as the Classic Theatre Company, a writer and director for the George Street Playhouse Children's Theatre, and in 1978 founded and served as President/CEO of Eastside Theatre Corporation and housed Little Shop of Horrors, one of the most successful Off-Broadway musicals ever produced. Mr. Schuster produced the Broadway and London productions Blues in the Night (1982 Tony Award nominee for Best Musical and 1987 Olivier nominee for Best Musical), served as general manager of the Broadway production, and produced and general managed the two national touring companies. Off-Broadway shows produced and general managed by Mr. Schuster include To Gillian on her 37th Birthday (Oppenheimer Award), The Garden of Earthly Delights (Drama Desk Award Winner), Angry Housewives (New York and London), The Chosen, Bouncers, Key Exchange (New York starring Brooke Adams and Los Angeles starring Kate Jackson), Eden Court (starring Ellen Barkin and Penny Marshall) and the Bloolips (OBIE Award-Winner), Vita and Virginia (starring Vanessa Redgrave and Eileen Atkins), Paul Rudnick's Jeffiey (Drama Desk Award nominee and Outer Critics Circle Award-Winner), David Mamet's Oleanna (London and two national tours, Drama Desk Award nominee and Olivier Award nominee), the Outer Critics Circle Award nominee Jam on the Groove, and Moscow Stations, Marvin's Room (Drama Desk, OBIE, and Outer Critics Award Winner), and national tours of the Drama Desk Award-Winner STOMP - the most successful show in Off-Broadway history. Mr. Schuster is the President and CEO of the Union Square Theatre Management, which until 2000 and the inception of West 37th Group, LLC, operated the Union Square Theatre, Minetta Lane Theatre, and the Orpheum Theatre in New York, The Royal George Theatre in Chicago and Marines Memorial in San Francisco. He holds a Bachelor's Degree in History and Theatre from the University of Nebraska and is a member of the Players Club, the board of directors of The Atlantic Theatre Company, and is a past director of the League of Off-Broadway Theatres and Producers.
